The Power of Hope

Hope is a powerful “thing”. Without it, a person loses purpose in life. A person devoid of hope doesn’t care to press on with life anymore, eventually leading to depression and other negative emotions. But with hope, a person visualizes a goal or an aspiration and then stays focused on enduring the hardship involved to get to the objective. Hope is technically not an emotion, rather an emotional state. This state allows a person to be active in one’s pursuit of the goal. Having hope is to imagine a positive outcome. It gets you focused and guides you to your goal.

Having hope actually heals your body both physically and emotionally. The Bible says in Proverbs 17:22, “A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” In fact, medically this has been proven to be true as well. During clinical trials of medicines, “placebos” are used to evaluate the efficacy of a treatment. A certain percentage of a group of people that tests are done on are given just sugar tablets or injected with plain water, with no medicinal content in them whatsoever. The surprising finding is that people seem to be healed even with these “fake” treatments. They hoped that the placebo would heal them, and their bodies rewired to actually heal them. This is the power of hope. It can, not always though, even physically heal you. The hope that one day you will succeed in your education. The hope that one day your relationship will turn right. The hope that one day your sickness will be healed. The hope that one day your financial situation will be stable. All these are powerful anchors of hope. My two-year-old son was diagnosed with a large brain tumor in March 2019 and an 8-hour emergency surgery was done on him immediately after the finding. He has minor complications and is still recovering from this surgery. But our hope and prayer are that one day he will fully recover. This anchor of hope helps us live our life day by day, with a grateful heart, that we get to enjoy him one more day.

The Bible provides yet another anchor of hope. It is in the person of Jesus Christ. The hope in Jesus involves believing that Jesus is God and that He became a human to walk on earth. He lived a perfect life, then offered Himself as a sacrifice to pay for the sins of every human being, died in the process, but resurrected and is now in heaven, desiring that everyone in the world believes this message and gets into a personal relationship with Him. The belief in this simple message and living the life faithful to a relationship with Jesus provides the most excellent hope anchor, which is that you will be with Jesus someday, live with Him forever, in a world where there is no suffering, no pain and no tears. It will be a world where there is only joy and blessings. Would you like to have this hope, the best of all hopes?
